| Commentary: Please read the article from JAMA on breast cancer screening. As many of my patients already know, I stress this screening very much in my practice. So much, I probably sound like a broken record to some of them. I can't emphasize enough the importance of self-exams, annual exams by a health professional, and screening mammograms yearly after the age of 40. There are some high-risk patients who need to be screened annually by mammography even earlier in life. I have encouraged many of my patients to get their first screening mammogram at 35 years of age, then wait until 40 to do yearly screening if they are low risk. Some words of wisdom: 1. Remember, low risk is still risk!!! 2. If you have a breast, you are at risk. 3. Even men get breast cancer. 4. The majority of breast cancers I have had in my practice, have no known family risk.
